Eco-Friendly Electrical Appliances

There are many advantages to the consumer when choosing green technology. Not only are you helping to preserve the environment but you can save money and lower your electrical bills. Eco-friendly appliances are designed to use less energy which means that you are using less electricity when you use them and therefore, reduce your electrical bill. When you are buying household appliances, look for those that have an “Energy Saving Recommended” mark. Those appliances that have an A rating will save you the greatest amount of energy.

Washing machine – larger appliances like the washing machine use up a lot of energy in the home. When choosing your washing machine, choose a front loading machine as this saves more energy than the top loader. A machine that is A+ rated and has a 40C wash will further save on electricity.

Refrigerators – Select a refrigerator that has a top and bottom rather than a side by side one. Avoid using ice makers, and defrosters as they use a lot of electricity. As with the washing machine, the eco-friendly refrigerator should be rated A+ or higher.

Dishwasher – Having the wrong dishwasher in your home can cost you twice as much in electricity than an eco-friendly washer. An energy saving dishwasher uses less water to operate by recycling the water it uses. It also produces less noise and does not use flame retardants that are harmful to the environment. Along with the A rating, look for a dishwasher with a booster heater.

Oven – A hybrid solar oven is a better choice because it heats up to about 400 degrees without any need for electricity. It also comes with an electrical backup for times when there is no solar power available.

The size of the appliance you buy will also determine how much energy will be used. Buy the appropriate size depending on the needs you have. The amount of energy that is consumed by an appliance is measured using watts and not voltage. This means that an appliance with low voltage will still use more energy. When you leave appliances on stand-by, they use about a quarter of the energy used to run them. Switch off the appliances and unplug them when they are not in use.

All the information that is necessary to determine how eco-friendly the appliance is should be clearly shown on its packaging.

Doing It Yourself:

SAFETY is your first priority!!!! Whenever you do electrical work of ANY kind, TURN OFF THE POWER!
This does not mean you just turn off the light switch. The power must be turned off at a breaker or fuse box. If you’re not sure where to turn the power off, then don’t do any electrical work!

Keep in mind that most electrical projects require a Permit and must be completed by a licensed professional. Most jurisdictions do not allow South Florida homeowners to permit his or her own electrical work.

Electricity can shock or kill through electrocution. It is a major cause of fires and when improperly installed, electical wiring is not only illegal it can be fatal.
